“It was a God moment.”
That’s how Debbie Hert, executive manager of My Cup of Tea, described recent events at the opening prayer she conducts daily with staff before work begins.
“I had told the workers that we would be getting two new employees and that they would fit in just fine,” Hert began. When the new hires arrived, Hert and the other 10 MCOT employees learned that Charlesetta Ferguson, a MCOT employee since November 2016, and LCool McClain, one of...

Patricia Craft has a deep sense of satisfaction. Her calmness is evident to all.
“I have a good life. I thank God. I got my own place. I got God,” she said.
Craft, 39, joined My Cup of Tea in April 2017. “I label tea. I weigh tea. I can do everything, but my favorite job is labeling the tea boxes,” she said.
Craft remembers starting her new job and being nervous and uptight. “Now I’m speaking and talking to everybody and laughing,” she said....

Over a period of about two years, April Powell became associated with The House at Orange Mound and then became employed at My Cup of Tea (MCOT). The slow process—similar to the waiting time while tea steeps—changed her life.
“I moved to Orange Mound from South Memphis and stayed with my children’s father. I’m a stay-at-home mom,” began the petite, attractive, 38-year-old mother of a five-year-old girl and three-year-old boy. “I was sitting around...

Cheryl Henderson is learning the tea business at My Cup of Tea and loving it. “I can do every job,” she said proudly. “Customer service, bookkeeping, and administration.”
Henderson also treasures the work environment. “It’s very soothing. There’s a calming voice here.”
Henderson, 53, was interviewed in March, a particularly good and life-changing time for her. A month earlier she was the grandmother of Julian, an active three-year-old. But...

Life on the streets in Orange Mound taught Bretta Calhoun many things. She mentioned two specifically: “Bitterness devours you. The fast lane didn’t get me anything but a ticket.”
She had passed by the House at Orange Mound many times. One day about two years ago she stopped. And she kept coming back.
The first thing she noticed about the House was that it was peaceful, then that it “smelled beautiful” and then that it “looked beautiful.”...

Charlesetta came to us at the House of Orange Mound a year ago, leaving the ‘crack house’ down the street from the Orange Mound Resource Center for the first time.
“I said to myself, if I can stick it out in jail for 6 months, I can stay in class for 4.”
She has 11 children by 6 (maybe 7) baby-daddies. “I don’t know who the father is of one of my kids.” This year all of her kids will have their first Christmas together with their mom. She...

We are in a dilapidated neighborhood. It has a rich history, but few know the story of the oldest African American Community in the USA…once a beacon, now a shell of what it once was. Businesses, jobs, and opportunities have all left for parts of the city our residents are unable to reach. The church buildings remain, but many of the religious leaders are gone, and their doors are closed all week… few resources are available to the community on a daily basis.
High rates of...

I love bowling! Although I haven’t been in years, I still enjoy it to the fullest.
There are tremendous limitations in poverty. Rekisha works nights in Homecare, and days at My Cup of Tea. She has a busy 6-year-old daughter who is a Girl Scout, loves to dance and is attending a Charter School in Orange Mound.
She hasn’t bowled in a long while, because recreation and personal time off is out of the question. No time, no expendable income, no gas, no...

My Cup of Tea’s iced tea line is made from our selected premium fine loose tea blends that have been pre-measured and heat sealed into family size filter packs, or pillows. Each flexible pouch insures freshness, has a zip-lock closure and contains 6 “family size filter packs” which make approximately 2-3 quarts of iced tea. On the back of each pouch we include traditional steeping instructions.
Good news: Our iced tea blends may also be cold-brewed!

“The only tea I knew was Lipton,” explains Phyllis Hubbard, who has since become a highly dedicated and successful leader in the My Cup of Tea business . Like many of us here at The House at Orange Mound, Phyllis wasn’t at first familiar with how specialty tea was grown, packaged and sold throughout the world.
But also like many of us, Phyllis has gained a wealth of knowledge from our resident tea expert, Debbie Hert, and has become quite passionate about producing and...

Due to a number of other opportunities in Memphis for our gifted craftsmen and brothers in Orange Mound, we had to rethink the construction of our popular barn wood boxes (also known as our Corporate Tea Samplers ) which offer 50 tea bags for $50. Almost needless to say, we decided to embrace the challenge ourselves.
Time to Tackle Tea Boxes
Several trips to Home Depot later, with a "We can do this" mantra and the encouraging instruction of our lead carpenter Allison...

Rosalyn is a talented hair stylist and a beloved member of our community who radiates inner and outer beauty and recognizes it in her fellow women of Orange Mound. No longer confused about her purpose for each day, she started volunteering her time to do what she loved, by styling hair for her fellow women of Orange Mound. Watch the video...
