The House in Orange Mound has become a sanctuary for friendship and a laboratory for training. Since 2013, we have been prayerfully knitting two cultures together at the busy intersection of Semmes and Carnes. Women come for assistance in stabilizing their homes and discover a community of support and empowerment. We call ourselves “Sisters."
Our women are to us …cherished porcelain cups, fragile, forgotten and set aside. The harsh realities of poverty, single parenting, racism, and joblessness mar and create fracture. As an adhesive will seal the cracks and repurpose a broken cup, we are committed to restoring hope and strength to the women who come to the House.
"A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until you put her in hot water."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Staffed by the Neighborhood Christian Center, the ministry at the House provides a pathway out, and lessons for discovering purpose and talents. Women are taught job readiness and how to secure jobs for life.
A gift of $1000.00 provides the opportunity for a young woman who has come to the House, to learn a trade and aspire to her first employment within three months. Women are trained in: tea education, packaging, labeling, inventory, marketing, shipping, couriering, baking, catering, and finance.
Volunteers and staff are investing energy and resources to make My Cup of Tea an engine for employment. We are equally dedicated to sustaining the integrity of our brand and offering specialty tea to our devoted tea customers.
